Choppers are originally borne from cruisers that were “chopped,” or basically relieved of their fenders and gas tanks.  This creates more of a “minimalist” ride, which first gained popularity amongst motorcycle-riding WWII vets returning from war.  Smaller “bobber” tanks were installed and the front end was cut and “raked,” or stretched out.

Floorboards or mid-bike pegs were also replaced with forward controls, giving choppers a more “slung” look. “Custom” bikes take their look from choppers, but are built from the ground up to look like a traditional chopper.
