 | Starter Remember, “There are only two
types of riders out there,” says 2008 Stuntwars champion Chris “Teach”
McNeil. “Those who have gone down and those who are going to.” So
stack the odds in your favor by starting right. A 125cc 2-stroke
motocross bike is perfect for the beginning rider regardless of age. A
lower seat height and lighter weight give 125’s a lower center of
gravity, making them easier to maneuver and control. Also, their wide
power range gives the beginning rider more manageable and versatile
throttle response. |

250cc 4-stroke is the perfect next step in motocross. As X-Games gold
medalist and multiple FMX record-holder Ronnie Renner says, “You have
to earn confidence.” And this is the perfect way. Intermediate
level-motocross bikes have an rpm range twice as wide as a 125cc
2-stroke. In competition that helps off the line with more low-end
torque. 4-stroke 250’s are also heavier than their 125 2-stroke
counterparts, which translates into more traction when coupled with the
improved torque. This makes a 250 4-stroke the perfect “next-step” for
advancing motocross riders who have mastered the 125. |

the time you are looking at 250 2-stroke/450 4-stroke thumpers you
should be VERY comfortable riding motocross bikes. “People crash all
the time (on bikes with too much power for their skill level),” Ronnie
Renner says. “They’re not even trying to hot-dog it or anything…it’s
just too much bike. Plain and simple.” Most of these are sold out of
the crate ready to compete. If you are an advanced rider, the
increased power and performance of these racing machines will still be
a handful. If you are just starting out you will quickly realize what
its like to have too much motorcycle underneath you. |
