Touring Bikes

In touring bikes the heavier and bulkier they are, the more experience they require.  There are a few lightweight touring motorcycles on the market in the 250-500cc range that maintain their style while being compact and nimble.  Also…many have a lower seat, keeping the bikes center of gravity low to the ground.  While perfect for any type of touring, these bikes are also ideal for everyday commuting.

The middleweights of this class, 500-1000cc, make them obvious intermediate touring bikes.  Many of the manufacturers give advancing touring riders a variety of options in this category.  And intermediate touring bikes provide slightly more “oomph” while still offering superior controllability.

Advanced touring motorcycles, 1000cc plus, are big, heavy, and are usually nice and comfy.  While their riders relax and enjoy a feeling of presence on the road, they sacrifice the ability to be agile and quick. But with thick cushy seats, satellite radio systems, and an abundance of storage space, this is rarely a concern for advanced touring bike riders.  And while they have superior top-end cruising speed…they are definitely the tortoise off the line.

Sport Touring

An increasingly popular bike in the touring class is the “sport touring” bike.  They are touring bikes that have adopted the sleek and powerful look of the sport bike.  The result in this hybrid is a stylish and more maneuverable touring bike.  And with more of an upright seating position, these bikes offer the sport bike look with the bonus of being able to ride all day in comfort.
